Using Aromatherapy for Stress Relief

No matter who you are or what you do, there is a good chance that stress is a part of your life. In moderate doses, stress is a good thing. It propels us forward, urges us to succeed and pushes us when we might lag behind, but it is definitely something that can grow to become a problem. Stress is something that cane become extremely prevalent in your life, and when it seems as though everything that you think about or everything that you do causes stress, you'll soon realize that it is time to look for a solution. Sometimes, solutions come when you least expect it and for many people, this is how they become familiar with aromatherapy!

At the most basic level, aromatherapy is the process of using smells and scents to alter the way that we feel or the way that we perceive things. Through working on your sense of smell, the essential oils that are used in the process of aromatherapy are very slightly absorbed into the bloodstream. Think about the fact that roughly 15 percent of the air that we breath goes through the roof our our nose, where they are translated directly to limbic system, a part of our brains that is strongly connected with emotion, mood, and instinct. The theory that aromatherapists work on is that aromatherapy will stimulate that part of your brain to release chemicals that will in turn cause a change in your mood or attitude.

We have long known that our sense of smell, though no where near as developed as that of a dog or a cat, is definitely something that greatly affects the way that we perceive things. For instance, if your nose is blocked up, you will barely be able to taste what you are eating. Similarly, have you ever noticed that certain scents will take you right back to different times in you life? Is there a perfume that you associate with a female relative that you were close to, or do strong cleaning product scents make you think of grade school?

For instance, you can use them on a lamp ring or electric diffuser, you can place a few careful drops into a hot bath, or you might simply use them with a carrier oil during a massage. When you are working with at trained aromatherapist, you'll discover that there are a number of different treatments that you might try and you should work with them to find the one that suits you the best.

What are some of the effects that you can achieve through aromatherapy? Though the end goal is usually the relief from stress, there are a number of ways to get there. When you are dealing with aromatherapy, you'll discover that there are about three common goals that can be achieved through the different essential oils. The first set of oils, which include lavender, myrrh, chamomile, jasmine and frankincense, are all intended to be used to relax you. On the other hand, when lemon, vanilla, geranium or rosemary are in play, the goal might be be to revitalize you and to make sure that you have the energy that you need to get through the day. Finally, when you want to feel more awake and more receptive to the world around you, take a look at what peppermint and eucalyptus can do to stimulate you.
