How Does Stress Affect Health?

How Does Stress Affect Health?

We are amazing creatures. We have our own built in safety feature. When we encounter a situation where danger might be present we go into hyper-drive and become almost super-human. We become much stronger and faster. It's an almost flawless system...almost.

When stressors are present, the body reacts with the “stress response” or the “fight-or-flight” response. This response is your bodies way of protecting itself when danger is perceived.

When this happens a shot of adrenaline and cortisol is released into the body and..

POW...we're now prepared to take action! Our muscles get tense, ready to spring and flex so we can escape to safety.

The “stress response” is also set up to calm our bodies back down once the danger has passed. It's totally fool-proof right?

Well...often when this response happens, fight or flight isn't the best option. Sometimes our stress is psychological in nature, meaning that the stressor stays present or doesn't pass quickly like a cheetah or some other type of danger from the past.

It's cause might be the result of constant pressure at work, or a difficult financial situation. We don't always have an effective release for these chemicals, like running and fighting. The “stress response” is prolonged, and can have a negative impact on us.

Good Stress

All stress is not created equal. The word “stress” has taken on a negative meaning today. However, it's effects can be good as well.

It can be what motivates us to make a needed change in our life. For example, a little stress might give us the push we need to get a higher paying job, to work more hours to pay for a family vacation, or get the car inspected so we don't get a ticket.

On the other hand, this is not the kind of stress this site was built for. We want to work with you to give you the tools to use to deal with the bad kind of stress.

We're here to give you some stress handling options. You see, we've been there...a lot! At times life just seems like too much to handle. The stress management skills we will provide can help.

The Negative Effects of Stress

In effect, longterm exposure to the hormone cortisol can lead to a slew of other issues itself.
