Holiday Stress Tips
The holidays bring visions of family, friends and an evaluation of what we consider to be truly important in our lives.
During the holiday season, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, among others, most of us will experience elevated levels of stress. There are many pressures unique to the holiday season. In many places, the weather makes it more difficult to get around and people are sometimes more physically uncomfortable. Those are minor in themselves, but when they persist over time they become elements which can encourage stress. The desire and expectation of buying presents, sometimes for individuals you may not be very fond of but feel obligated to buy for, can add to the pressure. This is especially true for people on a tight budget, as many of us are. Crowded stores, clogged streets and a lack of parking spaces also can contribute to added stress as well. We stress over cooking ornate and elaborate meals that can take most of the day to prepare. The trick to handling stressful situations is to have your Stress-Free-Toolkit filled to the brim with a variety techniques. You don't just want to learn to do sit-down meditations because this won't help you when you are in social situations...but you don't just want to learn breathing exercises because you may need to invest some “me time” after stressful social situations in order to unwind.
