Even Cave Men Have Mission Statements

In our lives we are constantly bombarded by choices, options, and directives. It's easy to lose our way, yet we don't always know we are lost.

How Do We Know When We're Off Track?

Your body knows when you're on the wrong path. You can feel it in your gut. You feel as though you're just going through the motions in your day-to-day activities. Our thoughts begin to get clouded, and we just get lost. It seems we've been taught to disregard our feelings and focus solely on our logic instead.

How Did We Get Here?

It's my guess that the hunters and gatherers of the past were very “in-tune”. They knew when trouble was coming. They knew precisely what their goals were. Let's face it, it meant their survival. If you had an off day, you could be injured or worse. The focus was for their basic needs like constant search was for food, reliable shelter, water, etc.

We're still looking for the same things, but we are going about getting them in a more indirect way. We now invest our time in work. In exchange we get a wage which we use for shelter, food, water, etc. It's no longer instinctual so we tend to forget to listen to our bodies.

We need to get back in touch with our instincts again. We need a guide.

How Do We Tune in?

What's your mission? Do you know what you stand for? What are you about? If you know these answers, then please go no further. If you're still here then let's dig a little deeper.

Do you know how big companies stay on track? That's right. They have a “Mission Statement”. We can use one as well...it's kind of a moral compass so we don't get lost while going through our very busy day.

The Secret Mission

Well, it's not really a secret. I'm just trying to spice it up a little. A mission statement is a short statement of purpose, usually no more than a paragraph long. Your mission statement acts as a guide. It provides direction when we feel we're off course. Lets take a look at a sample mission statement.

My current mission statement is...

for my family to always know that I love them, even when I am not a pleasant person. For my friends to know I am here to encourage and support them whenever they need me. To walk lightly on this planet, so as not to leave to a mark. To leave every space better than I found it. To never forget to believe in the magic. And to invest my time in the only time that really matters...the moment.

Can you see how a mission statement can make a difference to you?

Now before you move on...I'd like you to make your own mission statement. It doesn't have to be perfect, and you will change it often, but it's truly helpful.

That's why you're here isn't it?

It's Your Turn

When crafting your own mission statement it should...

  • Inspire you
  • Bring out the best in you
  • Challenge and motivate you
  • Communicate your values
  • Now you're back in business!

    Thank You
