Play Dough Fun

Ayden with his play dough creation

Playing with play dough is a great way to get your child's creative juices flowing, especially if your child doesn't like to get dirty and tends to get a little discouraged. Often with other activities your children might compare their skills with yours or their other siblings and believe their own talent isn't as good. The point here is to unwind and relieve the tensions of the day. With play dough most people are on the same level. Your creations and your child's will often both look close in similarity.

What you'll need: You can either make your own play dough or purchase play dough at your local grocery store.

When I think of play dough I am brought back to my childhood when my world consisted of crayons, paste, and glitter. What better way to relive stress than with play dough?

This is an activity that the entire family can be involved in. My 9 year old son, Ayden, my 9 month old daughter, Cosette, and I all popped open a can and got ready to be creative. With a little imagination we made a snake sitting in a tube ready to go floating down the river, a baby bracelet for Cosette to go around her arm (which she promptly tried to eat), a happy face with blue hair, and for those of you who are truly cool...Ayden made a skull.

There was something therapeutic about feeling the play dough squish between my fingers. I couldn't resist giggling as the smell of the play dough took me back to memories of sneaking bites of play dough when my Mom wasn't looking (which I don't recommend by the way).

Ayden and I began to make molds of Cosette's feet and hands and found that she enjoyed the way the play dough felt on her skin. She was a good sport and patiently sat as we modeled our latest play dough creations on her.

We had a lot of fun with this activity and highly recommend playing with play dough to unwind. It's also a great way to spend time together. The cost was cheap (about $1.99 for a 4 pack of play dough) and the mess was minimal.

Enjoy yourselves!
