Positive Affirmations in 4 Simple Steps

Once we've learned to monitor our thoughts for unrealistic and negative thought patterns we can begin to supplement our new mindset with positive affirmations. Positive affirmations provide a simple method for extremely powerful and effective results.

What is a Affirmation?

Affirmations are statements that can be repeated either out loud or silently until the message loses all meaning. This may sound counter productive, but is quite the opposite.

The point of an affirmation is to surpass the analytical part of the brain so that it won't know the difference between the past issue and the behavior we are trying to change.

Because of the repetition, the brain becomes familiar with the statement and no longer needs to analyze it sending right into the brain transforming it into a reality.

Any statement can be used as an affirmation. We might use an affirmation like "I am a positive and relaxed person." or "I work well under pressure." It can be anything you'd like it to be.

For best results, use affirmations while in a relaxed state of mind or with meditation. It helps to write down your affirmation and keep it where you will see it often.

Building Positive Affirmations

When building your affirmation keep the following 4 steps in mind:

1. Use the present tense

"I feel calm and relaxed."

"I choose to enjoy this moment."

"I am happy and content."

2. Keep them positive. In other words, don't focus on what you want to avoid.

Poor Example: "I live my life anxiety free."

Good Example: "I live positive and carefree."

3. Keep them realistic. You cannot fly off a building just because you repeat it to yourself until you believe it. You'd have to convince gravity first.

4. Use it often!

What areas in your life would you like to change?
