Making Sun Catchers

Erica and Ayden Making a Sun Catcher

What you'll need:

Sun catcher kit- you can purchase these for fairly inexpensive at any hobby store

Scissors- you'll need these to cut open the packets of baking crystals

Tweezers

Aluminum foil

Baking sheet

Bowls or plates- you'll need these to put the baking crystals in

It's time to make something beautiful! You'll want to start by taking your baking sheet and covering it with a layer of aluminum foil.

Next, cut the baking crystals open and put each color on it's own plate or bowl. Place your metal frame on the baking sheet and begin filling in the frame with the baking crystals.

Complete filling in the frame and bake in the oven per the directions on the package of your sun catcher kit.

Remember to breath and relax while doing this. My son and I tried this activity together and were too serious in the beginning. We were so wrapped up in wanting to make the colors perfect that we weren't enjoying the time we were spending together. We realized that we could be having fun creating something beautiful from our own hands and imagination. With the stress of perfection off of us, we were able to laugh and have a great time together.

Ayden with his sun catcher
In the end we created a sun catcher that was perfectly imperfect. The flaws that were accidentally created made the sun catcher memorable. We hung our completed sun catcher on our glass door for all to see. This activity will allow you to create something beautiful for the light to catch and all to enjoy.
