The Balance of the Bowl
by Claire Lewis
There is a feeling of peace that comes right after we do something that makes us happy such a a long meditation or a good fellowship lunch with a friend.
But how do we keep that good feeling? How can we draw on it during a stressful moment and direct the energy in a positive way? It can be easy to follow the stress and let it take us to a place that makes us feel worse.
There are many images we can carry to return to a peaceful frame of mind...something that reminds us of the calm within us. Just touching something special or recalling certain images can renew the centered feeling that is a source of strength and joy.
My favorite image of balance is the bowl. It's circular symmetry holds lessons of fullness, gratitude, and generosity.
The bowl can be seen in many ways.
Empty, it is full of light and open to receiving.
Full, it holds abundance and is ready to give.
Either function is a state for which to be grateful. The steadiness of it s nature remains the same as its function changes in relation to its status of empty or full. The bowl remains just as it is regardless of the circumstances; wide open to receiving or to giving as the situation requires.
So this is how the image of the bowl works for me:
If I have more than I am comfortable with handling, I consider that the bowl does not hold more than it can carry. I become grateful that I have so much and can freely give away. I am grateful to be able to give generously be it monetarily or by contributing the wisdom of my experiences.
If I begin to feel empty or worried that there is not enough love, work, money, or time, I consider the bowl is open to receive and will be soon filled up again. I become grateful and am open to the opportunities that are eminent.
Full or empty, the bowl brings feelings of gratitude for my present situation. Knowing this, it is impossible for me to feel stressed.
If you are feeling anxious and overwhelmed, simply close your eyes and picture the bowl. Remember that your bowl can be empty or full, and that either way, your life is exactly as it should be.
