Dealing With Stress In The Workplace
Workplace stress is a major problem, and it is a downward spiral. You experience problems at work, your stress habit kicks in, it leads to negative attitudes or health problems, and finally it hurts your work performance, leading to more stress. The only way to break the cycle is to take charge of work stress and learn how to cope with it. Stress from the job leads to physical problems like headaches, backaches and fatigue. These are recognized medical ailments. Work stress that is prolonged over time can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease. It also leads to mental problems like depression and anxiety. Worst of all, it forces many of us to leave our jobs, and can cause economic ruin. Quitting your stressful job is not an option to most, so let's see how what we can do about it. Figure Out What Stresses YouFirst, we have to do a diagnostic. The first step is to identify exactly what is causing your workplace stress. Everyday stressors can't be avoided in the workplace. What we need to do is identify and categorize our stressors - which are the big ones and which are the small ones. Dealing with co-workers is one of the major problems we all face, especially dealing with the boss. Sometimes there is bad communication between staff members. It's not always easy to keep the tone polite and gentle. A certain person you work with could be a major stressor to you! Unfortunately, it's not likely they'll go away. The workload is another major stressor. This one is tricky because there's little we can do about it. It all just needs to be done. When overwhelmed by the things we have to do, we can always get help, but sometimes this isn't enough. Work performance can also be a big problem. A tiny mistake made at work can cause you nightmares later. Even when everybody else has forgotten about it, it can stay in your mind and pop-up every so often, destroying your confidence. This doesn't come naturally for most people. The reason you need to gain control is that your negative thoughts are slipping in where they aren't invited. These tiny little negative thoughts can make your entire work life a living hell. How do you keep them away? By thinking positively instead of negatively. You should turn all your thoughts in a positive direction. The simple first step in controlling your mind is to become totally relaxed, and the best way to do this is through deep breathing. Everybody breathes all of the time, but few of us learn how to really breathe deeply. Deep breathing is great for stress relief, and it allows us to enter a relaxed state where we can be reasonable. This is the first step in controlling your own mind and thoughts. Get comfortable somewhere and begin to breathe slowly. Let each breath come naturally. When we're stressed, we breathe quickly or erratically. Let each breath come naturally, putting your body on "auto pilot." There are a few ways to use deep breathing as a benefit. One is to imagine that you're breathing out your stress, and breathing in the clear, cleansing air of positivity. With each breathe, you are breathing in positivity and breathing out negativity, and this helps to soothe and calm your mind. Another is to focus on a positive thought, and hold this thought in your mind for as long as possible. Take a negative thought you have about your work, like, "I can't do a good job." Turn it into, "I can do a wonderful job," and focus on that instead. Or, think of one of your work achievements or one of the things you like about your job. Deep breathing helps you get into a calm and focused state, where you can control your mind, and ultimately take control of your work life.
